DOT Bigwig Seeks Stricter Pipeline Safety Bill

Law360, New York (July 15, 2011, 3:40 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation’s top pipeline safety official told lawmakers Friday that the agency has concerns about provisions in a bill to update oil and gas pipeline safety standards, including a measure that preserves exemptions on certain unregulated pipelines.

Cynthia Quarterman, head of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that her agency largely agreed with a draft of the Pipeline Infrastructure and Community Protection Act, but said the bill contained some key weaknesses.
