USPTO Hits Milestone In Effort To Cut Backlog

Law360, San Diego (July 13, 2011, 4:16 PM EDT) -- A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office commissioner on Tuesday announced that although the agency expects a 4 percent increase in patent applications this fiscal year, it reached a milestone last month by reducing the number of applications pending a first review to about 695,100.

USPTO Commissioner for Patents Bob Stoll said that the June figure was the result of a major effort to break the 700,000 mark of applications awaiting a first office action by patent examiners.
