Chevron Settles With Maine Over Decades-Long Oil Leak

Law360, New York (July 15, 2011, 4:10 PM EDT) -- Chevron Corp. has agreed to pay $900,000 to Maine to settle Clean Water Act claims that a Chevron-owned oil terminal spewed 140,000 gallons of oil into the Penobscot River over several decades, the state announced Friday.

The oil tank farm was owned by Chevron and its now-subsidiary Texaco Inc. from the early 1900s until 1986. Over those decades, oil stored at the facility spilled into the ground and was still discharging into the nearby river, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection said.
