Freeport-McMoRan Reaches Deal Over 2008 Ariz. Spill

Law360, New York (July 15, 2011, 1:42 PM EDT) -- Arizona officials said Thursday that mining company Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Inc. had agreed to a $150,000 settlement over a pipeline mishap in 2008 that led to the discharge of 168,000 gallons of sulfuric acid and heavy metals into a tributary of the San Francisco River.

The settlement is part of a consent judgment in Arizona state court over alleged water quality violations stemming from the October 2008 spill, during which the corrosive acidic solution from the company's Morenci copper mine was discharged into Lower Chase Creek, according...
