DOJ OKs Monsanto Deal With Divestitures

Law360, New York (May 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the $1.5 billion merger of Monsanto Co. and cotton company Delta & Pine Land Co. provisional on the companies selling assets to preserve competition.

In an announcement Thursday, the department said it would require the divestiture of assets relating to the companies' cottonseed business to ensure a competitive market for farmers in the cotton belt.

The agency said it would also require Monsanto to amend certain license agreements as a condition of acquiring Delta. The licenses must be altered...
