Pa. Sewage Plant Faces Suit Over Shale Waste

Law360, New York (July 20, 2011, 7:41 PM EDT) -- Two citizen groups filed a federal suit against a Pennsylvania sewage treatment utility Tuesday, claiming it discharged wastewater from gas drilling operations in the Marcellus Shale into the Monongahela River without authorization from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Clean Water Action and Three Rivers Waterkeeper allege the Municipal Authority of the City of McKeesport lacks the technical means to treat oil and gas wastewater and has failed to apply for an update to its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit that would allow it to do so.

The Monongahela River supplies drinking water for close to 500,000 people in Pittsburgh...
