EPA Finalizes Mountaintop Mining Guidance

Law360, New York (July 21, 2011, 7:27 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday issued a final guidance concerning environmental permitting regulations for mountaintop mining in Appalachia, maintaining the strengthened requirements it set out in an interim measure.

The final guidance replaces the interim version the agency issued in April 2010. The agency said the new guidance included the latest developments in science and reflected the more than 60,000 comments it received regarding the interim guidance.
