Embracing The 'Nons'

Law360, New York (August 4, 2011, 12:20 PM EDT) -- The dirty little secret about lawyers is this: We aren't as special as we think we are. But we hide that fact very well. We start by differentiating ourselves from the riffraff. Thus, we are the only group of professionals that call people who aren't in our profession, "nons" — e.g. nonlawyers. That fact, in and of itself, signifies the arrogance and/or aloofness that characterizes our profession.

And that attitude carries over into how we think about our businesses. Rather than studying and analyzing how nonlawyers...
