Shell Wants High Court Review Of Human Rights Ruling

Law360, New York (July 26, 2011, 7:41 PM EDT) -- Shell Petroleum NV asked the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether a lawsuit accusing it of aiding human rights abuses in Nigeria was improperly brought under the U.S. Alien Tort Statute, according to documents made available this week.

The suit was filed in 2002 by relatives of Nigerians killed by the military while protesting the environmental effects of oil exploration in the 1990s, alleging that the company aided the operation.
