Spokane Diocese Exits Bankruptcy

Law360, New York (June 4, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Closing the door on a scandal-ridden chapter in its history, the Catholic Diocese of Spokane has exited bankruptcy in a move that will require the diocese's bishop and parishioners to come up with a $48 million payout to settle child molestation charges.

The diocese formally emerged from its two-and-a-half year bankruptcy on May 31 after lawyers in the case received e-mail copies of paperwork certifying that the diocese had complied with requirements set forth in its Chapter 11 reorganization plan, according to Greg Arpin of Paine...
