Judge Says US Can't Force Appleton Into Cleanup Work

Law360, New York (July 29, 2011, 3:02 PM EDT) -- A Wisconsin federal judge on Thursday rejected the U.S. government’s attempt to rope Appleton Papers Inc. into cleanup of the country’s biggest Superfund site, ruling he lacked authority to do so because the company likely couldn’t be held liable.

The government is trying to force Appleton, NCR Corp. and a handful of other companies to cover cleanup operations at the polychlorinated biphenyls-contaminated Lower Fox River in Wisconsin.
