Nigeria Sues Pfizer For $7B Over Drug Trials

Law360 (June 5, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Nigerian government has accused Pfizer Inc. of allegedly carrying out illegal trials of an unapproved meningitis drug that killed or disabled children, filing a lawsuit that is seeking nearly $7 billion in damages from the pharmaceutical giant.

The lawsuit, filed in a Federal High Court in the Nigerian capital city of Abuja, alleged that Pfizer did not obtain approval from local regulatory authorities when it tested 200 children with the antibiotic Trovan in the northern state of Kano in 1996, Reuters reported Monday.
