USDA Suspects Turkey As Source Of Salmonella Outbreak

Law360, New York (August 1, 2011, 1:03 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture alerted the public on Friday that salmonella-contaminated ground turkey may be the culprit behind an estimated 77 recent illnesses in 26 states.

The agency's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert saying medical reports and testing had shown an association between ground turkey and the illnesses, which were caused by Salmonella heidelberg. The FSIS has not yet identified the producer of the contaminated turkey.
