Schlumberger Seeks End To Oil Well Proppant Duties

Law360, New York (August 2, 2011, 3:53 PM EDT) -- Oil field services giant Schlumberger Technology Corp. filed an action Tuesday in the U.S. Court of International Trade, challenging two recent decisions by U.S. Customs and Border Protection imposing duties on imports of particles used to boost oil well productivity.

Schlumberger claims that on two separate occasions in 2010, the agency improperly classified its imports of proppants — millimeter-sized, irregularly shaped particles used to prop open oil wells during the hydrofracturing process in order to increase a well's productivity.
