Watchdog Attacks FDA Over Expert Conflicts Policy

Law360, New York (August 3, 2011, 5:36 PM EDT) -- A top U.S. Food and Drug Administration official is campaigning to loosen the agency's conflict-of-interest rules, an independent government watchdog asserted Wednesday, insisting in a letter to the FDA that it should work harder to find experts without industry ties.

The Project on Government Oversight told FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg it was concerned that remarks by Janet Woodcock, who directs the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, on the difficulty of obtaining independent, qualified experts signified an upcoming change in the FDA's conflicts-of-interest policy....
