SEC Disclosure Must Include Political Spending: Law Profs

Law360, New York (August 5, 2011, 3:51 PM EDT) -- An elite group of legal scholars on Wednesday urged the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to require public companies to disclose political contributions now that the U.S. Supreme Court has opened the floodgates to corporate money in campaigns.

The SEC should respond to shareholders’ growing interest in corporate spending as well as the high court’s controversial decision in Citizens United v. FEC and force companies to report the size and nature of their political spending, according to the petition.
