US Seeks Arbitration In Guatemala Labor Dispute

Law360, New York (August 9, 2011, 5:24 PM EDT) -- The U.S. filed for arbitration Tuesday against Guatemala in its first-ever case over a trading partner's alleged labor rights violations, saying the country has not moved fast enough to fix widespread problems with its worker protections.

Roughly a year after launching consultations over the dispute, the U.S. requested the establishment of an arbitral panel under the Dominican Republic-Central America-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said Tuesday.
