Exxon Seeks Rehearing In Indonesian Human Rights Case

Law360, New York (August 10, 2011, 10:49 PM EDT) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. asked the D.C. Circuit on Monday to reconsider its ruling allowing Indonesian villagers to bring claims under the Alien Tort Statute for alleged human rights violations committed by the company's security forces near its gas fields in Indonesia.

In a petition for a rehearing en banc, Exxon said the court's panel majority erred in July when it allowed for corporate liability under the ATS, contrary to customary international law, U.S. Supreme Court and Second Circuit precedent, and congressional guidance.
