UK Antitrust Agency Calls For Probe Of Cement Industry

Law360, New York (August 16, 2011, 7:41 PM EDT) -- The U.K. Office of Fair Trading asked the country’s Competition Commission on Tuesday to investigate the concrete mix and cement industry, saying a market study had found that the sector’s top players were stifling competition. 

The OFT found the actions of Lafarge, HeidelbergCement’s Hanson unit, Tarmac International Inc., Holcim Group’s Aggregate Industries unit and Cemex Inc. — which collectively control 90 percent of the cement market, 75 percent of aggregate sales and 68 percent of ready-mix manufacturing — could be restricting competition in the aggregates, cement...
