Shipping Co. Fined For Oil Discharge Near Puerto Rico

Law360, New York (August 18, 2011, 3:25 PM EDT) -- A Liberian shipping company based in Carolina, Puerto Rico, was ordered to pay $700,000 Thursday for discharging dirty oil from a ship and making false statements to U.S. Coast Guard inspectors investigating the discharges.

Epps Shipping Co. pled guilty in February to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships and making false statements. The company was fined $600,000 and ordered to make a $100,000 contribution to an environmental nonprofit tasked with rehabilitating and protecting coral reefs in Guanica Bay, Puerto Rico, according to the U.S....
