European Companies Fail to Exploit Patent Information, Survey Finds

Law360, New York (November 6, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- Most companies in Europe are uninformed about patent issues, and even patent attorneys fail to mine information available in databases, a new survey commissioned by the European Patent Office shows.

"Most companies and particularly SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) have no idea what patent information can do for them," the survey concluded.

The EPO commissioned the study of 1,904 companies, 443 patent lawyers and 29 universities in 30 European countries to gain a better understanding of current and potential users of patent information. It hopes...
