US, EU Must Boost Web Ad Privacy Rules: Consumer Group

Law360, New York (September 12, 2011, 10:35 PM EDT) -- A leading consumer watchdog group on Thursday urged regulators in Europe and the U.S. to adopt stronger rules to control advertisers that personalize ads by tracking Web browsers.

The current self-regulatory approach makes it difficult for Web users to see how much of their personal data is being tracked and manipulated, the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue said in a letter to the Federal Trade Commission and the Article 29 Working Party, which is the European Union group in charge of data privacy rules.
