Shell May Face UK Charges For North Sea Spill

Law360, New York (September 15, 2011, 1:41 PM EDT) -- Royal Dutch Shell PLC could face criminal charges from the U.K. following an investigation into the causes of an oil spill at one of the company’s North Sea platforms last month, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said Tuesday.

A pipeline in Shell’s Gannet F development in the North Sea leaked some 218 metric tons — about 1,300 barrels — of oil between Aug. 10 and and Aug. 19, possibly the largest oil spill in U.K. waters in the past decade.
