RJ Reynolds Loses Appeal Of Post-Engle Smoker's Suit

Law360, New York (September 21, 2011, 5:29 PM EDT) -- A Florida appeals court on Tuesday provided rare guidance on how to apply jury findings from the sprawling Engle tobacco class action to individual cases, upholding a $600,000 verdict against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in a suit over a smoker's death.

A state jury made the award to the widow of Roger Brown, a longtime smoker who died after contracting lung and esophageal cancer, after it concluded that Brown's addiction to R.J. Reynold's cigarettes caused his death, making him a member of the Engle class....
