5 Charged With $172M Canadian Telemarketing Scam

Law360, New York (September 23, 2011, 4:00 PM EDT) -- Canadian competition regulators announced Thursday that five people and four Montreal-based companies were facing criminal charges over an allegedly deceptive telemarketing operation that generated more than $172 million in sales and targeted businesses in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Central America.

The Canadian Competition Bureau says the telemarketing companies conducted a widespread scheme that marketed directories, subscriptions to online directories, office supplies and medical kits under false pretenses and at inflated prices. Some products were sold at 10 times their market value, it claims.
