House Dem Blasts DOI Over Reagan-Era Mining Regs

Law360, New York (September 26, 2011, 4:13 PM EDT) -- The House Committee on Natural Resources' top Democrat ripped a U.S. Department of the Interior agency Monday for its failure to update environmental safeguards for mountaintop mining since the 1980s, saying new data demonstrated new rules should be considered.

Rep. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts sent a letter to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, asking the agency to answer eight questions regarding its oversight of mountaintop mining by Oct. 14.
