Oranto-Chevron Blocks Bought With Bribes: Report

Law360, New York (September 26, 2011, 8:52 PM EDT) -- Chevron Corp. bought a majority stake in Liberian offshore oil blocks that Nigerian oil company Oranto Petroleum Ltd. secured by bribing Liberia's legislature, the international accountability group Global Witness said in a report released Monday.

Chevron bought a 70 percent share in three oil blocks that Oranto obtained less than four years earlier by funneling as much as $26,000 to the Liberian House of Representatives, Global Witness said.
