GM Daewoo Sues Chinese Car Maker For Design Piracy

Law360, New York (December 17, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- A joint venture between General Motors and South Korea’s Daewoo has sued China's Chery Automobile Co. Ltd, accusing the auto maker of knocking off its car designs.

In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Court, South Korea's GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company noted “extreme similarities” between the Chevrolet Spark, which is based on its Daewoo Matiz mini-car, and Chery's QQ car. Both models are currently being sold in China.
