EU Affirms Commitment To Competition Enforcement

Law360, New York (June 25, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Although French President Nicolas Sarkozy succeeded in having a reference to free competition deleted from a new European Union treaty, the EU's competition policy and enforcement will remain the same, European Commission Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said Saturday.

Kroes said that though the phrase “free and undistorted competition” no longer appears in the Protocol on Internal Market and Competition, the EC recognizes that “an internal market without competition rules would be an empty shell—nice words, but no concrete results.”
