Pacific Fruit Faces €8.9M EU Fine For Chiquita Cartel

Law360, New York (October 12, 2011, 12:27 PM EDT) -- The European Commission on Wednesday fined the Pacific Fruit group more than €8.9 million ($12.3 million) for allegedly fixing prices for bananas sold in southern Europe with Chiquita Brands LLC, which won immunity for tipping the watchdog off to the cartel.

The regulator concluded that both companies, two of Europe's primary banana importers and distributors, had set their weekly sales prices for bananas and traded pricing information for products sold in Italy, Greece and Portugal from July 2004 to April 2005.
