Midsize Law Firms To Fuel Merger Increase: Experts

Law360, New York (November 7, 2011, 11:39 AM EST) -- Law firm merger activity is gathering steam once again after stalling during the recession, and legal industry consultants say tie-ups among the industry’s middle-market players will provide most of the fuel.

There were 43 mergers and acquisitions involving U.S. law firms through the first nine months of 2011, according to legal management consulting firm Altman Weil Inc. There were just 39 in all of 2010, and Altman Weil principal Ward Bower believes the 2011 merger number could approach 60 by year’s end.
