Avid Infringes Soundtrack Editing Patents, Suit Says

Law360, New York (October 18, 2011, 1:02 PM EDT) -- SmartSound Software Inc., a company that provides royalty-free music for the video production industry, filed suit against video editing company Avid Technology Inc. on Monday, alleging infringement of two patents for systems used to edit movie soundtracks.

The suit, filed in Wisconsin federal court, claims that Avid and its Pinnacle Systems Inc. subsidiary previously licensed the patents-in-suit from SmartSound, so their alleged infringement was willful.

"Defendants have caused SmartSound substantial injury, including lost profits, for which SmartSound is entitled to damages," the suit claims.
