Patent Suits Up, But Damages Take Dive, Report Shows

Law360, San Diego (October 18, 2011, 4:22 PM EDT) -- While more patent suits are being filed with U.S. courts, the median damages awards are the lowest they’ve been in 16 years, according to a patent litigation study PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP released Tuesday.

PwC found that the annual number of patent filings had gone up at an overall compound annual growth rate of 4.9 percent since 1991 and that the number of patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had increased significantly from 2009 to 2010, rising by 23 percent to 233,127 patents.
