Novartis Unit Subpoenaed In HHS Fraud Investigation

Law360, New York (October 25, 2011, 7:39 PM EDT) -- Swiss drug giant Novartis AG's recently acquired Alcon Laboratories Inc. has been subpoenaed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over allegations of health care fraud, the company revealed Tuesday.

The department launched the civil investigation into Alcon's marketing practices and payments to health care providers on Sept. 23, Novartis said in its third-quarter earnings report. The subpoena requested information regarding Alcon's surgical equipment and ophthalmic medications Vigamox, Nevanac, Omnipred and Econopred.
