WTO Warns G-20 Against Resorting To Protectionism

Law360, New York (October 26, 2011, 2:49 PM EDT) -- Many G-20 countries are in danger of succumbing to encroaching protectionist tendencies, as continued economic difficulties are leading governments to engage in trade-restrictive behavior in ill-advised bids to protect domestic industries, the World Trade Organization said in a report Wednesday.

While unilateral action in favor of countries’ home industries appears attractive in the short term, it could make things much worse by sparking a string of retaliatory measures in which all nations will suffer, the WTO said in its biannual report on G-20 trade measures....
