Jewelry Co. Told To Pay $2M Over Illegal Coral Imports

Law360, New York (October 26, 2011, 8:59 PM EDT) -- A U.S. Virgin Islands federal court on Wednesday ordered a jewelry manufacturer to pay a $1.8 million criminal fine for trading protected coral imported to the U.S. in violation of the Endangered Species Act and the Lacey Act.

GEM Manufacturing LLC, which pled guilty on July 15 to trading in falsely-labeled protected species of black coral, was also ordered to forfeit more than $2.17 million worth of raw black coral and jewelry, making its total penalty of roughly $4.47 million the highest financial penalty for the...
