Samsung, Apple Face EU Antitrust Probe Of IP Battle

Law360, New York (November 4, 2011, 3:02 PM EDT) -- The European Commission said Friday it had requested information from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Apple Inc. about whether their global legal battle over smartphone patents ran afoul of competition law.

The issue is over so-called standards-essential patents, which cover technology needed to comply with an industry standard and must be licensed under fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms in order to comply with antitrust law.
