Protectionism Could Hurt Global Growth: WTO Official

Law360, New York (November 4, 2011, 5:13 PM EDT) -- Increasing protectionist tendencies, especially among G-20 members, will hurt global growth and threaten the economic recovery, World Trade Organization Deputy Director General Valentine Rugwabiza warned Thursday.

In a speech at the University of Hong Kong, Rugwabiza said that while much of the world resisted resorting to trade-restrictive practices in the aftermath of the financial crisis, disturbing trends have emerged in the past six months, indicating less restraint in adopting new protectionist measures and little will to dismantle existing policies.
