Refiner Fined $1M Over Toxic Waste Misdeeds

Law360, New York (November 4, 2011, 5:44 PM EDT) -- Dearborn Refining Co. and its majority stakeholder must pay $1.25 million plus interest to the federal government for failing to adequately contain hazardous waste sent by third parties to its processing plant in suburban Detroit, a Michigan federal judge said Friday.

U.S. District Judge Mark A. Goldsmith signed a consent judgment against the company in a suit launched by the U.S. government in September 2009. The suit sought to enforce a civil penalty assessed against the company and shareholder Aram Moloian in 2004 by the U.S....
