DOI Backs Fracking Despite Looming Rule Changes

Law360, New York (November 16, 2011, 3:30 PM EST) -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar assured a House panel Wednesday that his agency supports hydraulic fracturing, but said the regulator is still mulling updates to outdated rules governing the natural gas extraction process amid concerns over its impact on water quality.

Salazar fielded questions from the House Committee on Natural Resources on so-called fracking and oil and gas development, with several Republicans complaining that the Interior Department has been dragging its feet on domestic energy production to the detriment of the economy.
