Arch Coal Settlements Over Sago Mine Disaster Approved

Law360, New York (November 17, 2011, 7:31 PM EST) -- A West Virginia judge brought an end to litigation over the 2006 Sago mine disaster Wednesday when he approved six wrongful death settlements and several other agreements between Arch Coal Inc. and the families of miners who were killed in the disaster.

The terms of the settlements were confidential.

Thirteen miners were trapped in the coal mine after an explosion ripped through the mine Jan. 2, 2006, causing a fire and the release of carbon monoxide and other toxic fumes. Twelve died by the time rescuers...
