WTO Panel Sides With Canada, Mexico in COOL Row With US

Law360, New York (November 18, 2011, 5:53 PM EST) -- A World Trade Organization dispute panel handed a win Friday to Canada and Mexico, finding that U.S. country-of-origin labeling requirements for pork and beef runs afoul of the organization’s rules.

The country-of-origin labeling regime, as imposed on Canadian and Mexican beef and pork, essentially gives less favorable treatment to imported cattle and hogs from those two countries, in violation of the U.S.’s WTO obligations, the panel said Friday, asking the U.S. to rework those measures.
