Health Systems, Insurer Sent To Mediation In Antitrust Row

Law360, New York (November 28, 2011, 7:31 PM EST) -- A Pennsylvania federal judge on Monday referred to mediation allegations made by hospital network West Penn Allegheny Health System Inc. that rival UPMC conspired with insurer Highmark Inc. to strangle competition and raise prices in the health care industry.

In the midst of a shifting lawsuit that has seen contract feuds, appeals and a $475 million proposed takeover of West Penn by Highmark, U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab said mediation was the prudent course of action to resolve this tangled dispute.
