USDA Says It's Ready To Inspect Horse Slaughterhouses

Law360, New York (November 30, 2011, 5:17 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that it is prepared to carry out horse meat inspections and enforce interstate and international commerce laws after a little-noticed provision of a government spending bill earlier this month cleared the way for the reopening of horse slaughterhouses.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service group said it is ready to implement pre- and post-mortem inspections of horse meat as required by the Federal Meat Inspection Act if any horse slaughterhouses open in the U.S.
