EPA Floats Ship Permit Changes To Halt Invasive Species

Law360, New York (December 1, 2011, 5:24 PM EST) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday proposed more stringent regulations for the cleaning of ballast water on large commercial ships, which when dumped in ports can introduce ecologically damaging invasive species into local waters.

The proposed rules, in the form of a draft vessel general permit, are the result of a settlement reached in March between the EPA, environmental groups and the state of Michigan to make vessel permitting requirements stricter.
