Senate Republicans Block DC Circ. Nominee Halligan

Law360, New York (December 6, 2011, 4:25 PM EST) -- U.S. Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked President Barack Obama's nomination of former Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP lawyer Caitlin Halligan to a seat on the D.C. Circuit, the second federal appeals court nominee they've stonewalled this year.

A vote to close debate on Halligan's nomination passed by only a 54-45 vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to break a Republican filibuster. The vote went right down party lines — Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, was the only Republican who voted yes.
