FWS To Tackle Backlog In Wake Of ESA Settlements

Law360, New York (December 6, 2011, 4:02 PM EST) -- The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s recent settlements of suits over delays in hundreds of Endangered Species Act determinations will allow the service to tackle a backlog of listing actions and could help avoid costly litigation, the agency’s head told Congress on Tuesday.

The settlements resolve a group of claims by FWS’ most frequent adversaries, the Center for Biological Diversity and WildEarth Guardians, allowing the agency to spend less on litigation and more on ESA implementation, FWS Director Dan Ashe said in a House Natural Resources...
