EU Privacy Panel Rejects Industry Rules For Online Ads

Law360, New York (December 15, 2011, 6:19 PM EST) -- An advisory panel comprised of European Union national privacy regulators on Thursday rejected a code of conduct proposed by online advertising industry players to protect Internet users' personal data.

The panel said the code — which calls for self-regulation by the Internet advertising industry in the area of behavioral advertising, as well as participation in a pan-European website that gives consumers access to information about the advertising — fails to satisfy the requirements of EU privacy laws.
