DOJ Won't Probe Fair Labor Collegiate Apparel Plan

Law360, New York (December 19, 2011, 6:54 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division will not challenge a proposal by labor rights nonprofit the Worker Rights Consortium to implement a program enabling colleges and universities to avoid sweatshop labor when purchasing collegiate apparel, the DOJ said Friday.

The WRC’s Designated Suppliers Program procurement standard is designed to ensure that apparel with school names and insignia is made in factories that provide fair labor conditions for employees, including paying workers a living wage, the DOJ said.
