WTO Backs US, EU In Philippines Liquor Tax Appeal

Law360, New York (December 21, 2011, 7:21 PM EST) -- The World Trade Organization affirmed Wednesday that the Philippines' liquor tax scheme violates international trade law and attempts to protect domestic distilled spirits from rival products imported from the U.S., the European Union and elsewhere.

The WTO's appellate body upheld almost all of the major findings issued by a dispute resolution panel in August, which likewise concluded that the excise tax scheme ran afoul of the country's international obligations.
